Preparations for Surtex are rolling right along! One of the things I’m most excited about this year is the debut of my first look book – I’ve spent the last few weeks concocting mock-ups of products with my designs on them, and bringing them to life with the magic of paper craft and photography. I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of the hard bound version! Keep an eye out on my website for the final PDF version to be posted next week!

My studio is in a full-on tornado of Surtex preparation! With just about a month to get ready, I’m busy putting together promotional materials, fabric swatches, product mockups, a look book, both displays and more. I’m really excited about all the new art I have to show this year and can’t wait to unveil it for all to see!
If you are attending or exhibiting at the show, please stop by and see me at booth #730.

My oh my has it been a busy summer! After Surtex and my California vacation, things burst into action. There are new clients, new partnerships, a new part-time job, getting ready to move into a new place, exciting new plans and just new ideas in general. Most of this new stuff is not fully developed yet, and will remain a surprise until a later date, however 🙂 One tidbit I can tell you now is that I’m now a featured designer with Keka Case, a San Francisco based manufacturer of iPad and Kindle cases. Very exciting!
Even with all of that new stuff going on, I’m still finding ways to draw and paint even more by taking on extra challenges. I took the plunge and entered the Global Talent Search, a contest orchestrated by the famous agent Lilla Rogers. For Round 1, our challenge was to create a 5×7″ vertical journal cover for our dream client, Paperchase. I’m not sure how many entrants there are for round 1, but my guess would be LOTS. From this round, the top 50 will be shortlisted and continue to vie for the top prize, a two year contract to be represented internationally by Lilla. Here is my entry for the first round:
The next week or so is pretty much going to be consumed with moving, settling in an getting organized for another year of exciting illustration! I can’t wait to get my new studio set up, and you can bet I’ll follow up here with some pics 🙂

February 2013 is turning out to be a month of firsts for me! Notably, it’s the first time I’ve offered my designs as finished products for sale. This weekend is the Fresh Squeezed Art Market which I’ve been working to organize with my boyfriend, Scott. We have 12 local artist showing a wide variety of items – its going to be a super fun day, and great to see all our hard work pay off! Also, this morning I was fortunate enough to be interviewed on KCTV 5’s Better Kansas City, where I showed several examples of products from the market. Now, finally, I’m all prepped and ready to head over to KC tomorrow for set-up! Now that I have several products ready to go for sale, I decided to finally re-launch my Etsy store (I briefly sold prints on Etsy before I moved to South Korea in 2009).
Here’s a few of the items I’ll be selling this weekend at Fresh Squeezed Art Market. All fabric repeats were designed by me:
1. Cosmetic bag in emerald greeen Andes-inspired fabric
2. Coasters in a variety of fabrics
3. Waves of Love and Volcanoes of Love cards and decals
4. Wallets in a variety of fabrics
5. Pocket-style wall organizers in my sangria fabric
Hope to see you out at the market this weekend!

In my last two months in Korea, it seems I’ve neglected ye olde blog a bit here. Let’s start with what’s now old news, but still quite exciting. Please let me introduce www.leahhoelscher.com
My website is up, finally! This year I’ve had the opportunity to work for a magazine and collaborate on projects with friends, while continuing to work in my sketchbooks and store away precious ideas for the future. I’m feeling a second wind for design and illustration and I’m planning on making that my focus once I return to the states after leaving Korea and traveling (more on that to come). Making his website was my number one goal for the year and a big step in the right direction for my career.
