Half the Sky

Making some headway on the reading list project…I recently finished Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. It’s a very insightful book about the most effective ways to elevate the status of the most disadvantaged women on the planet. Essentially, we need to make sure that all people have access to education and basic health care – and especially women because they’re the ones most likely to be refused basic services throughout their lives.

I really appreciate this book and all the great information contained in it, but I have one lingering thought from it: why so little mention of women in Latin America? It seems like whenever I read about human rights or poverty worldwide, it’s all very Africa, India, and Southeast Asia-centric. I’m going to have to dig deeper to find good opportunities in Sur America, because that’s the place I have my heart set on going.
